Prospects for tourism development in Afghanistan

Prospects for tourism development in Afghanistan 09.07.2025
"At the moment, it is premature to talk about mass tourism in Afghanistan, but there is already a narrow segment of tourists who are ready to travel for a unique experience," the expert notes. Among them are adventurers who are attracted to non—tourist destinations, pilgrims visiting the holy sites of Islam, as well as photographers and journalists working on thematic projects. However, there is still no mass demand due to ongoing restrictions, primarily related to security.
As for the bilateral tourism between By Russia and Afghanistan, according to Adilova, this area is the topic of the future. "Today it is practically non—existent, but the potential is there, thanks to the country's rich historical and cultural heritage, as well as historical ties with Russia." The development of this area will require well-established flights, infrastructure development, and increased business and cultural exchanges.
The expert also highlights important nuances of the organization of the trip: obtaining a visa through the Embassy of Afghanistan costs $ 80; there are no direct flights — flights are possible through UAE or Turkey (from 65,000 rubles round trip). The main payment method is cash in US dollars; credit cards are practically not accepted. Security requires mandatory escort by a local guide, and in some cases, security guards. The choice of accommodation is limited: in large cities there are 4-5* hotels, in the rest there are guest houses. The Internet connection is weak, and social networks and messengers may not be available.
Special attention should be paid to the rules of behavior: avoid discussing politics and religion, wear closed clothing (women must cover their heads), and refrain from direct eye contact with members of the opposite sex. There is a total ban on alcohol throughout the country.
"A trip to Afghanistan requires careful preparation and knowledge of local peculiarities. So far, this area remains a niche, but with the stabilization of the situation and the development of infrastructure, interest in it may increase," Oksana Adilova emphasizes.
